Sheen Valdes
January 8, 2016
Jen's Editing Note: We see kindness on our Facebook page quite often. Just before the holidays, one of our members asked if there was anyone in our community who needed some extra help.
I knew of someone who could use a little boost and, boy, did Sheen ever come through! She delivered two huge care boxes of food, cleaning products, and hygiene products for this family. Also of note, Sheen's husband, Sam, was apart of a giving program while serving in Afghanistan. He built an orphanage there and provided donated food from the US Army. There's something special about people like Sheen and Sam... I hope you enjoy their Q&A as much as I have. Thanks, Sheen! |
Q. Where are you from and how did you decide to move to Estrella?
A. From kind of all over - Military Life. Originally from Flagstaff, Arizona and my husband, Sam, from El Paso, Texas. We recently moved here about a year ago from South Korea. Q. Can you please tell me a little about your family?
A. My husband is a 15 year veteran of the US Army, currently USAR and is a Pilot in his civilian life. I am currently a Muay Thai Fitness Instructor and used to own my own gym in Flagstaff. We have 2 little girls aged 10 months and 2 years old. |
Q. We first met through your holiday giving effort... Can you tell me how you came up with the idea?
A. We came up with the idea due to needing support a few times in our lifetime as well. We had gone through some hard times ourselves and were blessed enough to find our footing. We pay it forward now by buying large bulk pallets of food and we break them up into boxes and disperse to those who need it. Additionally, being a Veteran family we make sure to make CARE packages for homeless veterans and we typically adopt a Veteran family once a year around the holidays to buy gifts and needed items for- and sometimes if the blessings come in we will pay some bills on their behalf as well.

Q. How many people did you help and where did you get the funding?
A. We ended up helping around 32 families this year. In some small way. Funding comes through saving efforts made throughout the year in anticipation of the holidays. We continue to help throughout the year through volunteer efforts. Q. Please tell me about EMR Kickboxing and Fight Fit. What is your event for children?
A. The program started to offer an exciting new outdoor exercise program to EMR residents without having to pay high fees per class. We offer a Tiny Thai's class for kids ages 5-10 who want to learn Muay Thai Kickboxing and Anti-Bullying effort programs. |
Join as many Social Media sites as you can and introduce yourself. Get involved in good deeds and always pay it forward. It's a tight community and very welcoming if you just step out and meet new people.

Q. What do you like to do in your free time?
A. What's free time?! Spend quality time with my family. It's what matters the most and we just don't get enough of it. I take advantage as often as I can. Q. What is one thing you'd like to see in Estrella over the next 5-10 years?
A. A NEW fitness gym- that offers some cross fit classes as well as outdoor running exercises, kid programs and self defense classes. Of course, a Muay Thai curriculum offered as well. Q. Anything else you'd like to add?
A. We feel very blessed to have moved into this community- we have met many great people who have made this "home" for us and very welcoming. You, Jen, being one of them. JEN: Thanks, Sheen! |
