Jen's Editing Notes: Many times, we get great #FridayFeature ideas from our private resident page.
This week... a nomination from a past feature, Jessica Sabo. She says, "Trey Clay and Natalie Gentry live here and have an amazing Mountain Bike life. The work for a company called "World Bike Parks" and travel around the US featuring different MTB bike parks to include in their APP. They are amazing people and riders and also spend all their free time working on our local trails. You can see the amazing photography Trey does, too." Wow! "Amazing photographer" is right! You must scroll to the bottom of this page for the gallery of photos. I can only dream of seeing those places with my own eyes someday! Please be sure to scroll to the bottom of this page to view Trey's photos. They are gorgeous!! Thank you, Jessica, for the nomination! I hope you all enjoy this feature as much as I do!

Q. Where are you from and how did you decide to move to Estrella?
A. We’re from the ‘Pacific-North-Wet”. Specifically, Olympia, WA. We lived there for 8 years before we couldn’t stand the rain and dreariness that persisted in western WA for 6 months out of the year! You’ve probably seen or at least heard of the Twilight Movie Series? Well, that was filmed not too far from Olympia. After 8 years of vitamin D deficiency, we started to look like the Vampires in the movie. I am a Physical Therapist & Natty is, um…I still can’t accurately explain her ‘big-kid’ job. Put it this way, she worked in the operating room on very complex neurological (brain & spinal cord) cases. We needed a change for the better that involved lots of sunshine and low stress living. Estrella provides! Q. Can you please tell me a little about you and your family?
A. It’s just Natty and I. We’re DINKS! We had a dog, but he (Dude) passed away recently from F*ckCancer! We love the outdoors, especially mountain biking. However, Natty and I originally met while rock-climbing in WA. She has completed 8 marathons, multiple triathlons and one IronMan Trialthon in Tempe! Our passion for mountain biking and desire to travel heavily influenced our decision to leave WA, buy a RV and hit the open road. We’ve been traveling and living in our RV for at least 8 months out of the year (over the last 5 years!). |
Q. Can you please tell me about the company you work for?
A. We worked for Bike Magazine for 2 years when we first got on the road. They hired us to travel to lift-served Bike Parks around North America. We rode the trails, created videos, photo galleries, and wrote editorials for them. The 3rd year, Bike Magazine didn’t have the $$$ or manpower to hire us again. So, we decided to start our own company reviewing bike parks around the world. It’s called WorldBikeParks (http://www.worldbikeparks.com). And, now, we have just recently developed and launched a mobile app called BikeParkPro (http://www.bikeparkpro.com). It’s a mobile GPS tracking device that records pertinent bio-metrics such as speed, vertical descent (altitude), laps, trails, and mapping for all of the Bike Parks in the World!

Q. What is a recommendation about the local trails for someone who hasn’t seen them, yet?
A. “Black Jack” is one of the newest trails in the Estrellas. It’s fun to ride or hike it, but be careful because it’s steep in places and of course very rocky. The scenery is amazing, especially where the trail gets close to the mountain peaks. It’s not to be missed either on foot or tire tread.

Q. I understand you get to do a lot of traveling. Where are some of your favorite places to visit and why?
A. There are so many great places we’ve had the opportunity to travel to and experience, especially over the last 5 years. Some of the most special places would be: Bisti-Badlands – NM, The White Pocket – AZ, Water Canyon – UT, Warren Falls – VT, Pololu Valley – HI, and Umpqua Hotsprings – OR. I’ll let the photos explain the “why”.

Q. What else do you like to do in your free time? I understand Trey is a photographer…
A. We both love photography and videography. Natty is an excellent video editor. Check out some of her edits here: https://www.youtube.com/user/worldbikeparks/videos Natty is a runner, I really enjoy going to the trampoline gym on occasion, and we both like doing some canyoneering trips.

Q. What is something you'd like to see in Estrella over the next 5-10 years?
A. What we really need is a ‘Natural Grocers’ grocery store! Safeway is just not ‘cutting it’! We’d like to see the new 303 Hwy NOT come through Estrella and, in the process, destroying the natural beauty of the area and many of the trails we love so much. Also, we’d like to see the F.I.N.S. area NOT developed. Preserving these open spaces to recreate is one of the main reasons we are here today. To us, the trails are what we value most about living in Estrella. If it were to be bulldozed, we would have to move on to ‘greener pastures’.

Q. Anything else you'd like to add?
A. No, thanks for including our story and thoughts and sharing with the residents’ page. Cheers, Trey & Natty.
