PETER EGYED & CROSSFIT FURY
ORIGINALLY POSTED FEBRUARY 12, 2016
Editing Notes: If I had to pick the top 5 people who inspire me most in the West Valley, Peter Egyed would certainly be at the top of my list.
Peter and I first met at the G.A.I.N. event in 2008 when it was still a small community event at the Goodyear Community Park. He joined our nonprofit effort called Goodyear in ACTION which motivated children and families to live healthy lifestyles. Peter has always been a champion of children's fitness and is the owner of CrossFit Fury in Goodyear. He recently married Carren. And they continue to inspire others to be the best they can be. I've watched Peter grow his business over the years... I've also seen him accomplish incredible goals. YOU may have seen him in the CrossFit games, too! The guy lives what he preaches. Paleo diet and daily exercise. This summer, he's offered an incredible summer camp program for children 5-18 years old. My daughter has thrived under the program and it's proven to be the go-to program for youth athletes in the west Valley this summer. We're thrilled to revise this feature from February 2016. Q. Tell me a little about yourself. Where are you from and how did you decide to live in the West Valley?
A. I am an Arizona native with the last 10 years of my life spent in the West Valley. I grew up in Maryvale for my elementary years and moved to the north valley where I attended Barry Goldwater High school. After High school I spent a few years working construction in both new home building and remodeling. After a few years there I decided an education was important and moved to the west valley where I began attending Estrella Mountain Community College with a focus on Math and Science. During my time there I was also pursing my passion of Strength and Conditioning both in practice and academics and this is when I starting following the CrossFit Program with the direction of my physiology professor at the time. Shortly thereafter I began competing in CrossFit and my focus shifted from Math and Science to Health and Wellness as well as entrepreneurship. By my 4th year in college I had opened CrossFit Fury and the rest is history! |
Q. You recently got married! Congrats! How did you meet?
A. Yes I met my wife Carren at the gym in 2009 as she was one of my first 50 members or so. We developed a strong friendship for the next year and began dating in 2010. Five years later we married on 3-14-15 (pie day!) and have built an amazing home in Litchfield Park and are looking forward to starting a family here in the West Valley! She is currently teaching Career Exploration and Marketing at Desert Edge High School and has a masters in Guidance Counseling.

Q. I saw you last spring at the Flavors of the West event at the ballpark. Can you tell me about the event and the men's organization you're with? Any plans for this year?
A. Two years ago I was invited to join the West Valley Mavericks which is a men's philanthropic social club in the west valley. The mission of the Mavericks is to promote Culture, Commerce, Community and Charity and specifically trying to help the youth and future generations. We hold an annual food festival, Flavors of the West where we highlight all the amazing restaurants here in the West Valley. It is really an honor to be a Maverick for I have met countless professionals from a wide variety of backgrounds who all share a desire to better our community.

Q. Of course, you're best known for your phenomenal CrossFit Fury business. How did you originally learn about it... and eventually decide to open?
A. As I mentioned earlier I was attending college with a strong desire to better understand mathematics and Physics specifically. In my free time I was practicing and learning about strength and conditioning for which I was using to help overcome some personal battles. After competing in the very first CrossFit Games I realized I needed a better place to train. Unfortunately commercial gyms are not typically focused on increasing performance as they are the appearance of fitness. I knew if I wanted to continue to train for the CrossFit Games I needed to build a gym focused on teaching athletics and increasing peoples performance. In September of 2008 I signed a lease of a small 2000 sqft warehouse on Bullard Ave in Goodyear, built half of the equipment and was passionate about changing peoples lives. Within a year I had to hire help for I could not teach all the classes and within two years we double our space and were employing nearly 10 people. Nearly 8 years later we have filled up a 15,000 sqft space, employing nearly 40 people while offering health care and retirement options and are serving over 600 people on a monthly basis. |
Q. I'm beyond thrilled that you will be working with the Az EPIC Volleyball Club in getting the players in shape and prepared for a great season. You have a passion for helping kids... as I learned in our partnership through Arizona in ACTION. Can you tell me more about your efforts with kids and the classes you teach aimed for children?
A. Nothing is more important in my mind then getting our youth active and enjoying their fitness. Humans are supposed to run, jump, lift and in general have fun! We have really lost touch with our fitness and abilities as a nation and if we can show kids the joy of activity and the rewards of their efforts it can really make a huge impact on their life.

Q. What do you like to do in your free time?
A. As much of my free time is spent at home with my wife. There is nothing we enjoy more then spending time together around our house. We remodeled a home that was built in 1951 a few years ago but as any homeowner knows there is always small jobs and improvements to be done! I have been a passionate home gardeners for years but do not spend as much time with that now that Fury Farm is going. I really enjoy spending time at the gym helping with the classes and finally I spend quite a bit of time working the logistics and building the team for the community center.

Q. What is one thing you'd like to see in the West Valley in the next 5-10 years?
A. The Community Center. The families and lives we will be able to help improve will be countless. We do our best to provide resources to anyone regardless of economic ability and I only see that growing with the center. Could you imagine free family field days every Saturday and anyone coming out to plant and harvest fresh produce right here in Goodyear? The possibilities are endless but we just need to get there!

The majority of what we sell is Organic and most importantly it is local. It is mind boggling that living in Arizona with all of our agriculture resources that we would buy produce that is shipped across this country or the world!
Q. Please tell me about your fresh food and farm. I hear you have more great news to share.
A. We have always been proponents of fresh and local food. One day in the gym I got to talking with a cotton farmer an agriculture teaching about potentially starting an organic farm here in town and I couldn't resist. With our different professions and abilities we joined forces and started Fury Farm. We are currently growing on 7 acres of land on Bullard Ave just south of I10 in an effort to connect to community to agriculture. We bring families out on the land to plant to crops and a few months later we bring them out to harvest their hard work. Additionally we source local produce from some of the larger professional farms in the area and supply this produce to the members of our gym and 10 other gyms around town. Q. Anything else you'd like to add?
A. We are always looking for individuals and business who are interested in seeing the Community Center come to fruition. I know this project is going to be much bigger than myself or Fury and I need to build a team to help get this done.
