JULIE SISK
MAY 29, 2015
Fridays are all about residents! This week, we asked our followers to nominate an Estrella resident who goes above and beyond to be featured here.
Julie Sisk was nominated for her "Servant Leadership." We know Julie is deeply involved with Heartbeat of Estrella and reached out to her for a Q&A. We learned she's truly involved in many activities that help the less fortunate. THANK YOU, Julie, for all you do to help others! |
Q. Tell me about yourself. Where are you from and how did you decide to move to Estrella?
A. I am from Sammamish, Washington and I moved down here with my husband, at the time, in 2002 when he was transferred. We chose Estrella because we liked the farms surrounding the area and like that it was on a mountain with lakes and palm trees, a little green to remind me of home.

Q. Tell me about your interests… what do you like to do?
A. I like to garden, and enjoy making cards and jewelery. I enjoy hiking the Westar Hills and walking the lakes as well.
Q. You are very involved with Heartbeat of Estrella. Can you tell us about this group and which projects you’ve overseen?
A. I am a member of Estrella Mountain Church and am considered the Local Missions Intern. What a wonderful group of people and I have made many friends there. I am the only one left who started Heartbeat of Estrella and so it has been incorporated into the church. I do administer the Facebook page for Heartbeat and will use it to continue to try and inspire our community to get involved. I have a passion to serve and enjoy applying that to my faith and serving God. I started the Operation Christmas Child Packing Party because I was blessed to see little children in Namibia open their shoe boxes and it was so touching! They were lit up like Christmas trees over toothbrushes, toys and candy, things our children here don't appreciate. And what a simple project to get our community involved of all ages! Businesses can donate items, people can make things, and we can shop the sales all year long and the second year we doubled the amount of boxes that we put together! It is so rewarding to see the kids packing for kids around the world and knowing that we are really going to change that child's life.
Other projects that I was involved in for Heartbeat was a free luncheon that we did to try and get people involved in volunteering, we had someone from Hospice of the Valley speak, as well as The Homeless Youth Connection. People talked about the Meal Train we have at the church and volunteering for I believe it was Streetlight.org.

Q. Why is Operation Christmas Child one the organizations you like to support?
A. We helped with the Health Fair that the church put on and raised money for Operation Christmas Child supplies for shoe boxes.
I am involved with the church's local missions and have organized and led people to bring food and feed the homeless through You Matter Ministries, and put together a Card Making party to make cards for the church to use.
My real passion is for missions and I have been to Namibia, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic and will be leaving in June to do another mission trip to the DR.
Q. What is one thing you’d like to see in Estrella over the next 10 years?
A. I would love to see our community become one that reaches out to each other and meets the needs of those around them. I have spent time collecting clothing and household items for Mexico and the homeless, but I have also found people in our own community who needed a helping hand and I was astounded at the generosity of those in our community who stepped up to help! I love seeing that and I feel so blessed to live in Estrella with so many generous people! I would love to see a clothing and food bank right here in Estrella even if it started out of a garage, but I know there is a need and those to meet those needs.
I would love to also see our community to embrace our elderly. I have met so many here who are limited on what they can get involved in because they don't drive or don't drive at night. So many who can't go out and weed their own yards. wouldn't it be great to have our own senior center in Estrella!

Q. What motivates you to help others?
A. I think what motivates me is my faith, but there is a joy in giving and I love to see others experience that joy as well.
