Jen's Editing Note: The new year is just around the corner. And if you're looking for inspiration... this is it!
Estrella has many strong, healthy, positive women in our community. Member Sally Aston is certainly one of them. You'll see her name pop up on the West Valley Cycle Facebook page taking on new goals and accomplishing them.... She also gives dudes a tough time at local rides on a weekly basis." ~ClippedIn Not only did she race... she did great by placing 9th in the USA Cycling Masters Road Nationals - her very first national race! Read about it here.
We hope you enjoy learning as much about Sally as we have. THANKS SALLY! |
Q. Where are you from and how did you decide to move to Estrella?
A. I was born in Scotland, I lived there until I graduated college in 1995. I moved to the USA to and got married. My husband was in the US Navy, we lived on the East coast then San Diego before settling in Goodyear. We were living in Palm Valley but after driving out to Estrella, we decided this was where we wanted to make our home and raise our family. We built a home in Estrella in 2003. Q. Can you tell me a little about your family?
A. I have been married to my husband JT for almost 20 years, we met in Rhodes Greece when I was still in college and he was in the Navy. It was literally love at first sight. We have 2 boys. Sean is in 8th Grade at Westar and Cameron is a Junior at EFHS. We also have a 13 year old dog named Rudy. |
Q. Can you please tell me about the sports you enjoy?
A. My favorite sport is cycling. I mostly race on my road bike but I also enjoy mountain biking. I also love trail running and hiking.

I grew up running and playing sports but became fairly inactive as an adult. In 2007, a friend suggested we do a triathlon. I completed one, even though I could barely swim, but I was hooked.
Q. When did you start competing? Was it a passion that grew into a career of sorts?
A. I grew up running and playing sports but became fairly inactive as an adult. In 2007, a friend suggested we do a triathlon. I completed one, even though I could barely swim, but I was hooked. I went on to race many triathlons including Ironman distance. It was through Triathlon that I got into bike racing. I have raced for a local team the past 2 seasons, making it to Category 1 in less than 2 years. I’ve raced all over Arizona and last year I competed at Master’s Nationals in Ogden, Utah. I enjoy racing everything from crits (fast circuit races) to hilly road races. Q. What local clubs are you in (West Valley Cycle... etc.)?
A. I race for a Phoenix bike team called The Velo, we are a new team for the 2016 season and I’m very excited to race with them in AZ and CA. I also ride with the West Valley Cycle group sometimes. |
Q. What has been your favorite place to visit to ride, run, or swim?
A. This past summer I took my bike with me on our family vacation to Southern California. I rode with friends in San Diego but by far my favorite place to ride was the hills around Santa Barbara. My favorite local rides are Bartlett Lake, Tortilla Flats and of course, our wonderful trails here at FINS.

Q. What is your advice to the person who would like to start getting fit in the new year?
A. My advice for getting fit is to find an activity that you enjoy. I love being outdoors and I feel like a kid when I am riding a bike. It doesn’t feel like work, it’s always fun. It’s even better if you can find people to exercise with. Q. What else do you like to do in your spare time?
A. I love to hike and trail run. We have awesome trails here in Estrella and I also enjoy the Phoenix Mountain Preserves. I also love reading, watching movies, drinking red wine and sitting around the fire pit with my family. Q. What is one thing you'd like to see in Estrella over the next 10 years?
A. I’ve seen a lot of changes in Estrella since we moved here in 2003. I would like to see some more restaurants and development around the lake area. Hopefully more entertainment options so we don’t have to go “down the hill” so much. |
